Alicante is easily misread when seen only through the postcard. Sea, rice, terrace and castle: they are all there, but the city becomes more interesting when the volume drops a little and attention shifts to its tables, bars and pauses.
A first visit can begin in the old town with coffee, continue at a bar where produce leads, move through Mediterranean cooking with roots, look at the city from above and end with a drink made with craft. There is no need to exhaust everything. It is enough to choose the right rhythm.
A first reading of the city
This route does not try to show Alicante by marking points on a map. It works better as a first reading: which bar still carries weight, which table cooks with judgement, which terrace explains the setting and which drink can close the night without turning it into noise.
The city benefits from that rhythm. Walk a little, sit down when needed, avoid confusing central with touristy or Mediterranean with obvious. On a first visit, Alicante is better enjoyed when something is left unresolved.
